As a part of Make Music New York 2012, the annual music festival in New York City marking the beginning of summer, celebrated composer Philip Glass debuted a new choral arrangement of “The New Rule” in Midtown Manhattan’s Father Duffy Square. Over 200 professional and amateur singers gathered to give the public performance of the piece in an unusual venue – a pedestrian plaza – and before an unsuspecting audience of pedestrians and passers-by.
Per an NPR blog post preceding the event, “The New Rule” features text by the medieval Sufi poet Rumi, as translated by Coleman Barks, and was arranged for eight-part mixed chorus. This arrangement is an adaptation from the composer’s 1997 3-D ‘digital opera’ Monsters of Grace.
