ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Soldiers from the Arizona Army National Guard’s 108th Army Band recently completed a mission to Kazakhstan, strengthening the state’s partnership with the nation through musical performances and collaborations. According to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, the visit, which coincided with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, fostered connections and demonstrated the power of music to bridge cultural divides.
The mission supported the Arizona National Guard’s State Partnership Program, a long-standing relationship that has facilitated military exchanges and relationship building. The band performed alongside the Kazakhstan National Guard Male Choir, collaborated with local musicians, and represented the United States during events celebrating America’s milestone. Staff Sgt. Roberto Paz, Operations Sergeant for the 108th Army Band, stated that the mission became more than just musical support, representing Arizona, the National Guard, and the United States.
The band incorporated popular Kazakh songs into their repertoire, including “Kúiim” by Kazakh artist Alem, which resonated with local audiences. Videos of the collaboration drew tens of thousands of views. The musicians relied on nonverbal communication and mutual trust to refine performances, focusing on creating something meaningful for the audience.
The mission also provided an opportunity for the Arizona National Guard to introduce itself to a wider audience in Kazakhstan, appearing on nationally broadcast television and radio programs. Specialist Benjamin Schlamb, a pianist for the 108th Army Band, joined the ensemble shortly before departure. The experience reinforced the ability of music to communicate without words, fostering connections and building trust between the American and Kazakh military musicians.
SGT Carlos Parra, with the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, reported that the mission served as a reminder that Army musicians contribute to national security in ways that extend beyond ceremonies and concerts.
