Auckland, New Zealand – Music educators registered with Music Education Aotearoa (MENZA) are invited to craft a kōauau, a traditional Māori flute, Menza reported. The Kōauau Wānanga takes place Saturday, September 12, at Puawānanga Marae located at Glenfield College on Kaipatiki Road.
The session focuses on the instrument’s history alongside its traditional and contemporary uses. Organizers have prepared blanks so attendees can construct their own taonga. The day begins with a welcome at 9 a.m. and will continue into the evening, concluding with a hāngi feast.
Participation requires current MENZA membership, which is free to obtain. The workshop fee is $50, and registration closes September 10 to secure a spot. An invoice follows registration as confirmation. This local event provides a specific opportunity for member educators to engage directly with Māori musical traditions through hands-on creation. Those not yet registered must join via the organization’s website before signing up for the wānanga.
