Australian Conductor wins International Award for gender equity work

Australian conductor and music educator Joanna Drimatis has been awarded the 2026 J. Michele Edwards Conductor Award by the International Alliance for Women in Music, recognizing what the organization called her deliberate efforts to achieve greater gender equality in the concert hall.

Limelight-arts.com.au reported the award honors Drimatis for her programming and advocacy work. She currently serves as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Beecroft Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the NSW Doctors’ Orchestra, and has conducted the Sydney Youth Orchestra among other ensembles.

For school music programs, Drimatis holds the position of Music Education Specialist with the Australian Music Centre, where she co-curates and conducts the Momentum Plus orchestral recording project. The source reported she received the NSW State Luminary Award at the 2020 Art Music Awards for sustained contribution to the performance, programming and advocacy of Australian works and string music education.

Drimatis said she was overwhelmed and honored by the recognition, thanking the composers, musicians, orchestras and collaborators she has worked with over the last three years. She said she looks forward to continuing to promote diverse programming in her orchestral practice, according to the report.
