A new 10,000-square-foot center for music education, research and cultural engagement has opened at IIT Madras in Chennai, India, e-architect reported. The Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research is dedicated to one of India’s most celebrated music composers and was designed and built by Ekarth Studio.
The center is part of IIT Madras’ “Music for All” initiative, which aims to foster research in acoustics, sound synthesis, artificial intelligence, signal processing, instrument design and the scientific understanding of Indian music, according to e-architect. The ambition is to create a space where science, mathematics, engineering and technology can intersect with music education.
Bamboo serves as the primary structural system, shaping open, shaded spaces for learning, recording, performance and exchange. Classrooms of varying capacities, recording spaces and gathering areas look toward landscaped courtyards and shaded outdoor spaces, e-architect reported. Filtered daylight, moving air, surrounding trees and shifting shadows become part of the learning environment.
At the center, an amphitheater-like gathering space provides a setting for rehearsal, performance and collective learning. The bamboo roof rises into nearly nine-meter-high arches, creating column-free spans of up to 15 meters. Skilled artisans carried out the splitting, bending, bundling and joining primarily with basic carpentry tools, and the center was completed in eleven months with limited reliance on heavy construction machinery, e-architect reported.
