BANDON High School band chases another state title after years of growth

The Bandon High School band in Oregon is preparing for upcoming competitions with a chance to qualify for state in May, according to KPIC. The program won back-to-back state championships before finishing second last year.

KPIC reported that band director Dave Weston, who has led the program for more than 15 years, has seen the ensemble grow from roughly 11 or 12 students to a roster of 46. Weston said watching students develop skills and gain confidence is among the most rewarding parts of his job.

Seniors Aiden Wallace and Rylen LaPlante have participated in band since fifth grade, giving them eight years in the program. Wallace said winning state titles his freshman and sophomore years made competing seem easy, but a narrow second-place finish his junior year showed how much dedication the activity requires.

LaPlante, a section leader, said every member must attend and put in effort for the band to succeed. Students hold weekly sectionals where smaller groups work through difficult passages. LaPlante also helps younger musicians learn parts and feel welcome, part of a program structure that connects students across grade levels.

Despite limited funding as a small school, LaPlante told KPIC that student commitment helps the band compete against larger programs.
