The BBC reported that young musicians from Barnsley are celebrating a summer of international success. The Barnsley Youth Choir, representing Great Britain, won two gold medals in the gospel and pop categories at the 2026 World Choir Games in Helsingborg, Sweden. The senior choir, comprising members aged 14 to 24, defeated teams from China, Indonesia, and New Zealand before traveling to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Separately, the Barnsley Town Concert Band took 42 pupils on a five-day tour across Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The BBC noted the band works with the Barnsley Music Service and South Yorkshire Music Hub to make musical education inclusive and accessible. During the trip, students performed three concerts, including one in Maastricht on the same stage where legendary musician André Rieu performed later that day.
Andy Cudworth, a spokesperson for Barnsley Council, said the experiences help young people develop new skills and create lasting memories. Alex Francis, manager of the music service, added that the tours build confidence and bring participants closer together. Choir organizers expressed pride in competing against extraordinary ensembles from around the world.
