Members of the National Youth Choir of Scotland joined professional forces to perform Gustav Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied during the Edinburgh Festivals, The Scotsman reported. The review highlighted the participation of these young singers alongside the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under conductor Sir Donald Runnicles.
The Scotsman noted that the cantata, written by Mahler when he was 17, requires significant vocal and orchestral resources, including offstage musicians and soloists. The publication described the inclusion of the youth ensemble as part of an impressive array of forces that delivered an atmospheric and magnificent interpretation of the work. The piece tells a Grimm fairy tale through three parts, utilizing dramatic orchestral colors and specific vocal demands.
The performance featured soloists Kathleen O’Mara, Catriona Morison, John Findon, and Nicholas Brownlee, according to the report. The Scotsman stated that many of Mahler’s quirky harmonies and dramatic orchestral color were evident in this rarely performed early composition. The concert also included Franz Schubert’s unfinished Symphony No. 8, which served as a prelude to the main cantata.
