Bowling Green music Festival gives students classroom access to pulitzer composer

The College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University will host its 47th annual New Music Festival Oct. 15-17, giving music students direct access to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe through master classes, seminars and performances. BG Falcon Media reported the information.

Festival director and music industry assistant teaching professor Justin Johnston said Wolfe will give a presentation on her creative process, visit with students and listen to performances of her work. He described the visit as a significant educational opportunity for students in the music program.

The festival features nine concerts over three days, with seven at the Moore Musical Arts Center and two off-campus venues. Students largely choose their own programs, though Johnston asks them to feature at least one or two pieces by the guest composer. The festival received 1,400 submissions through its call for entries from composers across the United States.

Johnston said the off-campus concerts reflect a goal of reaching new audiences, noting that new music can be some of the most accessible entry point for people unfamiliar with classical music. He said he hopes to expand the festival’s community presence as the 50th anniversary approaches.
