The Rose Conservatory in Brockton, Massachusetts, is expanding access to strings education for more than 50 local students who might otherwise lack such opportunities. WBUR reported that the after-school and summer program, founded by educator Greg Fernandes, offers comprehensive orchestral training alongside essential community support services where no family is turned away for inability to pay.
Fernandes, a Brockton native and former teacher at elite private schools, began working with children in his community in 2020 before formally opening the conservatory in October 2021. The curriculum guides students through music theory, vocal training, and percussion before introducing string instruments like the violin, viola, and bass. Participants form the city’s only youth orchestra, with many students mastering multiple instruments.
Beyond musical instruction, the program provides daily hot meals, tutoring, and access to a food pantry for families. Operations rely on grants, donations, childcare vouchers, and tuition from families with the means to pay. As initial students advance to middle and high school, the conservatory is developing a new curriculum tailored for teen musicians this fall. Educators aim to use these arts experiences as a gateway to academic and social success for Brockton youth.
