Brooklyn Educator Builds Music Program with Digital Support

P.S. 197, The King’s Highway Academy in central Brooklyn, has developed a comprehensive instrumental music program over the last six years, according to MakeMusic. When educator Kimberly Rosenbaum arrived, the school possessed no band, orchestra, or inventory. Today, the school hosts fourth and fifth-grade bands, an after-school string orchestra, and a jazz band that includes students with exceptionalities.

Managing approximately 1,200 students across early grades requires significant operational coordination. Rosenbaum teaches numerous general music sections and conducts small-group lessons during lunch and recess. To address the challenges of directing beginners in compressed timeframes, she employs MakeMusic software to act as an automated conductor. This approach allows her to move away from the front of the room to correct individual hand positions and embouchures while the program manages count-offs.

Rosenbaum also navigated complex New York City Department of Education purchasing rules by securing a Sole Source Vendor Letter from MakeMusic. This document eliminated the requirement for three competitive bids, streamlining the acquisition process. The program serves a diverse population, including many English Language Learners. Rosenbaum utilizes Spanish-translated editions of method books within the platform to ensure accessibility. Additionally, students in self-contained District 75 classes join full ensemble rehearsals, using visual note feedback tools to practice independently. Rosenbaum describes the software not as a rigid curriculum, but as a flexible tool that empowers students by providing access to essential practice resources.
