The Surya School of Music in Chennai recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and staged its 300th performance, an event held to enter the Nova World Records, The Hindu reported. The milestone highlights the work of educator Prabha Gurumurthy, who founded the institution to provide music training and stage access for children and young adults with special needs.
Gurumurthy expanded her teaching scope during the pandemic after a student on the spectrum expressed a desire to perform, The Hindu noted. What began with 15 students has grown to nearly 80 learners, many of whom are over 18 and non-verbal, receiving instruction at a facility managed by the V-Excel Educational Trust. The school features diverse performance formats ranging from devotional songs and karaoke to orchestra setups, solo acts and duets.
According to The Hindu, Gurumurthy emphasizes that tailored lessons and positive reinforcement allow specially abled youngsters to master musical skills. She stated that regular performance opportunities have significantly boosted student confidence and self-esteem while using music as a calming tool. Looking ahead, the educator plans to introduce instrumental training and livelihood initiatives. Additionally, students will participate in 100 planned shows honoring lyricist Kaviarasu Kannadasan, further integrating the ensemble into broader cultural celebrations.
