Christchurch City Council voted on June 26, 2026 to allocate $4 million toward a permanent facility for the Christchurch School of Music (CSM), part of the council’s 2026/27 Annual Plan. The funding is conditional on CSM raising an equal amount in matching donations, leaving the organization to secure an additional $4.6 million to meet its $12.6 million capital target, according to Muzic.NZ.
The school, which has operated for seven decades and serves roughly 1,500 students ranging from infants to retirees, will relocate from its current patchwork of portacabins, industrial spaces and borrowed venues to a dedicated building in the city’s Arts Precinct. The move is expected to centralize operations and improve access for families across suburbs via public and private transport, the source reports.
CSM’s director, Celia Stewart, said the grant arrives at a time when arts funding is under pressure and highlights the council’s recognition of music education’s community value. The school offers instruction in a wide array of instruments and ensembles, plus outreach programs in strings, band, ukulele and recorder for local schools.
Notable alumni include singer Bic Runga, clarinettist Mark Walton and violinist Benjamin Morrison, who credit CSM with early musical development. The new facility aims to solidify CSM’s role as a hub for community music education throughout Christchurch.
