The Columbians are using one of Drum Corps International's youngest rosters to develop leadership alongside performance skills during the 2026 season. The Pasco, Washington, organization includes many first-time corps members who are learning the demands of touring, rehearsal and competition together.
DCI reported that veteran members and instructional staff have emphasized peer support as the corps adapts to its largest national tour. Young performers are being asked to take responsibility for rehearsal habits, preparation and the culture they create within their sections.
That approach treats the marching season as more than a competitive exercise. Members develop time management, resilience and communication while preparing a production that must improve from one performance to the next. The experience also gives emerging student leaders a practical setting in which to learn how individual preparation affects an entire ensemble.
The Columbians' growth illustrates how independent marching organizations can complement school music programs. Students return to their local ensembles with additional rehearsal experience, stronger performance confidence and a clearer understanding of collaborative leadership.
