Cox Mill High School band invited to perform in Dublin St. Patrick’s Day parade

Cox Mill High School’s marching band has been invited to perform at the 2027 St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin, Ireland, WBTV reported. The invitation, extended by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, marks the first international performance for the ensemble, with about 120 people expected to travel.

Band director Drew Carter told WBTV that the group secured this opportunity through an application process reviewed by a panel of judges selected from around the world. Carter noted that marching bands are not traditional in Ireland, describing their appearance as a novelty for local audiences. Students have already begun intensive preparations, including summer rehearsals. Head Drum Major Jillian Dykes described her personal commitment as totaling 13 hours daily between school practice and home sessions.

Senior student Sushmita Bhushan expressed surprise that their school program could achieve such an international milestone, while fellow senior Joseph Bjerg described the upcoming trip as a unifying family experience for the musicians. The students face months of continued rehearsal and fundraising efforts before departing for the parade. Dykes indicated that representing their community abroad will be a defining memory of her high school music education journey.
