The Donegal Chamber Orchestra is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, marking two decades of providing performance opportunities for students and amateur musicians across County Donegal. Donegal ETB reported that the ensemble, managed by the Donegal Music Education Partnership, was established to help classical string players achieve high levels of excellence.
According to Artistic Director VÃctor Yélamo, the concept originated in 2005 when violin tutor Orsolya Szabó-Yélamo began teaching ensembles to develop student skills. This initiative led to a three-week course at Abbey Vocational School in June 2006, where the closing concert marked the group’s first public appearance. Based at the Regional Cultural Centre, the orchestra rehearses weekly and prepares five distinct programs annually featuring diverse musical styles.
Donegal ETB noted that the orchestra has performed at various historic venues, including Glenveagh Castle and Conwal Parish Church. To commemorate the milestone, the group scheduled a gala concert at An Grianán Theatre for Sunday, October 25, and a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria with The Conwal Singers on November 28. Auditions remain open for string players aged thirteen and above. Requirements include Grade 5 RIAM or equivalent for violins, violas, and cellos, while double bass applicants require Grade 3 RIAM or equivalent.
