Dutchtown Band director marks 54 years in music education

Sheily Bell, band director at Dutchtown High School in Louisiana, is celebrating her 54th year in music education, Yahoo reported. Bell’s connection to the school dates back to her time as a student at the original Dutchtown High School, and she returned to help launch the new school’s band program in 2002.

Bell’s passion for music took shape while performing with the LSU Tiger Marching Band, where she realized within two weeks that teaching music was her calling, according to Yahoo. She went on to teach at Catholic High in Baton Rouge and several other middle and high schools, spending nearly 20 years as head band director at East Ascension before starting the Dutchtown program.

Yahoo reported that Bell credits her mother as her first music teacher and says her husband and parents supported her by attending concerts over the years. She has a distinctive way of remembering her students, often recalling the instruments they played before their names.

Despite more than five decades in the classroom and band room, Bell told Yahoo she has no plans to slow down, saying she could not sit at home after retiring. For Bell, the work is about building relationships, inspiring students and creating a legacy that continues long after the final note.
