Eight choir students from Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville have been selected to participate in the 2026 California Choral Directors Association Coastal Regional Honor Choir, the most in recent memory according to The Vacaville Reporter.
The students earned their places through a competitive audition process that required them to perform an Italian solo and demonstrate musicianship through scales, triads, tonal memory and sight-singing, The Vacaville Reporter reported. The selected singers are Ryann Birdsong, Johnathan Burton, Donovan Dewitt, Isabella Glover, Aleks Mires, Connolly Morris, Riley Sampley and Evelyn Underwood.
Choir director Colby Hawkins told The Vacaville Reporter the students are the only ones chosen from the Vacaville Unified School District and all of Solano County and its neighboring counties. Hawkins said the achievement reflects months of preparation and dedication.
Several students described music as a constant in their lives that builds community and confidence. Glover, a senior alto, said she entered high school uncomfortable singing in front of others and that her selection demonstrates personal growth, according to The Vacaville Reporter.
The students will travel to Sunnyvale from Nov. 5 through Nov. 7 to rehearse with regional singers under guest conductors and choral clinicians, culminating in a Nov. 7 concert, The Vacaville Reporter reported.
