Evanston Township High School and New Trier Township High School are jointly reviewing reports that members of the Evanston marching band were subjected to racist and homophobic comments and other offensive behavior during an Oct. 16 football game at New Ryan Field, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
The information comes from a joint statement the districts posted on Evanston Township High School’s Facebook page. The districts said the conduct was directed at students who were there to perform and represent their school, and that the incident has caused concern for students, families and the broader community.
Both administrations said they take the reports extremely seriously and are working closely together to investigate and determine appropriate next steps. They also said they will respect student privacy and maintain confidentiality during the process.
The joint statement did not specify how many people are accused, what specific words or actions were reported, or when the review will be completed. It also did not say what action could follow before the investigation concludes. Both districts are asking anyone with direct knowledge of what happened to report that information to school leaders.
