Fairhope High School's marching band is using frequent water and shade breaks as students rehearse through a south Alabama heat advisory, FOX10 News reported.
The band's summer schedule runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. as students learn music and drill for the fall season. With the heat index near or above 100 degrees, directors have scheduled breaks about every 15 minutes, according to students interviewed by the station.
Students described the physical demands of marching rehearsal and said the controlled practice helps prepare them for performances. The report also underscores a broader operational issue for school music programs: marching instruction combines musical work with sustained outdoor activity, requiring directors to adjust schedules, hydration and recovery time as conditions change.
Heat safety is particularly important during preseason camps, when long rehearsal blocks can coincide with the year's highest temperatures. Programs should follow district athletic and emergency policies and respond to local heat guidance rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
