Fairhope High School’s marching band is pressing on with its annual summer band camp even as a heat advisory covers south Alabama, according to a report from fox10tv.com.
The report states that students are on the practice field from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, working on music, memorizing drill formations and getting ready for fall performances.
With the heat index climbing to around 100 °F, band directors are inserting regular water breaks and allowing time for students to cool off in the shade before returning to the field.
Band members say they pause roughly every 15 minutes for three to five minutes, a routine meant to lower the risk of heat‑related illness.
Students also note that the demanding conditions are intended to build endurance, help them adapt to outdoor performance environments and improve their show quality.
The article adds that Fairhope’s football team is likewise practicing in the heat as it prepares for its upcoming home opener against Baldwin County.
