Ferris State University reported that its marching band has returned to campus with 77 student members, surpassing initial recruitment targets before its first public performance. The ensemble, directed by Assistant Professor Daniel Atwood, is preparing for a debut on Aug. 28 at Top Taggart Field during the football season and home opener against Pittsburg State University.
The program, which operated from 1955 until the mid-1990s, was revived after more than a year of planning and fundraising. Atwood noted that while logistical tasks like ordering instruments and uniforms remain urgent, the overwhelming student interest has been historic. The roster includes more than 30 first-year students and participants from as far away as Alabama.
Student leaders expressed pride in the group’s rapid growth and intense rehearsal schedule. Drum major Kyren Passenier described the experience as a career highlight, while section leader Faith Jones emphasized how the ensemble allows non-majors to sustain their musical development. The university administration supported the initiative to enhance campus culture, with plans already set for additional performances at local venues later in the semester.
