Enyah Talamaivao, a Sāmoan classical singer and criminology student from South Auckland, has been named the first recipient of the Infratil New Zealand Youth Choir scholarship. pmn.co.nz reported that this new financial award will cover her annual membership fees and help fund the ensemble’s international tour scheduled for 2028. The support aims to alleviate the significant costs associated with participating in the national youth choir, including travel, accommodation, uniforms, and food.
Talamaivao described the news as life-changing, noting that the relief allows family resources to be directed elsewhere while she pursues her musical dreams alongside her university studies. She is currently beginning her second three-year term with the choir, which previously gained international acclaim by winning Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Beyond her performance role, Talamaivao serves as a conducting intern and advocates for greater Pacific representation in classical music leadership. Infratil Chief Executive Jason Boyes stated that the scholarship reflects the company’s commitment to supporting people and communities. Talamaivao expressed hope that her achievement will inspire future generations of Pacific musicians to raise standards even further.
