Florida State University News reported that three alumni from the FSU College of Music are applying their training to strengthen music education and community engagement across Miami. The university highlighted a new documentary showcasing how these graduates serve diverse populations, ranging from middle school orchestras to early childhood learners.
Todd Queen, dean of the FSU College of Music, stated that these alumni exemplify the institution’s focus on using music to educate and connect communities. Etienne Charles, a 2006 graduate now teaching at the University of Miami, credited his FSU experience with shaping his belief that music builds bridges between people of different cultures.
Vivian Ventura, an orchestra director at Southwood Middle School and the 2026 Miami-Dade County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, attributed her professional growth to her graduate studies at FSU. She noted that students learn vital life skills through music, including how to get along, communicate, listen and think about their actions.
Portia Dunkley, founder of the mobile program Teeny Violini, utilizes her FSU foundation to provide high-quality music access for young children who otherwise lack opportunities. Dunkley expressed enthusiasm for the college’s new bachelor’s degree in community music, stating it has the ability to grow, expand and set the bar for other schools nationwide. These efforts demonstrate how curriculum and classroom experiences in Tallahassee directly impact music access in South Florida.
