Gamble Montessori High School in Cincinnati is preparing to field its first-ever marching band at the school’s homecoming football game, marking a milestone in the 21-year-old institution’s history.
WKRC reported that band director Greg Thatcher launched the effort to give students their first experience performing at a Friday night football game, building confidence and school pride in the process.
The school has been rebuilding its music program after the pandemic reduced participation. According to WKRC, last year 18 students participated in band, and this year that number has grown to 30. Thatcher told WKRC he hopes to reach at least 50 members by next year.
WKRC reported that some students already have marching experience through Cincinnati Public Schools’ all-city district ensemble. Student saxophonist Liam May told WKRC he looks forward to earning credit toward college, while student Darin McClinton described managing nerves ahead of the debut.
The band will perform the national anthem, cheer from the stands, and take the field at halftime with selections including Push It and Pharrell’s Happy, according to WKRC.
WKRC reported that Thursday’s homecoming will be the band’s only performance this season, allowing students time to grow. The program relies on donations and fundraisers, and Thatcher hopes the debut starts a lasting tradition.
