Glee reboot announced by Disney and Hulu

Glee reboot announced by Disney and Hulu

Disney and Hulu have announced a reboot of Glee, the Emmy-winning US high school musical comedy drama, according to BBC. The original series, created by Ryan Murphy, premiered on Fox in 2009 and ran for six seasons until 2015, chronicling the highs and lows of choir members from Ohio.

BBC reported that Murphy has written a reboot script with collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan and has been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, who were enthusiastic about the idea. The show tackled topics such as sexuality, race, disability and mental health, and its choir’s covers introduced older hit songs to younger audiences, BBC noted.

According to BBC, the cast overtook The Beatles as the non-solo act with the most Billboard Hot 100 appearances around 2010, and the show was adapted for a concert tour. Singer Max George, who appeared in the sixth season, told BBC Scotland the experience was amazing and he would love to do it again. BBC also reported that cast member Chris Colfer acknowledged a reboot would be difficult following the 2020 death of Naya Rivera, who played glee club favourite Santana Lopez, but recognized fan demand for a revival.
