EdNC reported that the Grimsley Senior High School marching band performed on Halifax Mall in Raleigh to mark Arts in Education Week, a period declared by Gov. Josh Stein to celebrate arts learning. While the event recognized schools exposing students to the arts, EdNC noted state data showing 1.1 million students participated in arts programs during the 2021-22 school year, yet more than 23,000 students across 91 schools lacked access.
Director of Bands Jeremy Ray told EdNC that the 108-member ensemble focuses on inclusivity and excellence, describing the program as life-changing. Students interviewed by EdNC emphasized how the band fosters deep friendships and discipline through rigorous rehearsal schedules starting in August. Guilford County Schools Director of Arts Leigh Ann Little noted the program’s resilience and growth following pandemic disruptions. Ray attributed the success to collaboration between middle and high school educators.
State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green affirmed in a message covered by EdNC that arts education is a right for all public school students, not a luxury. Meanwhile, Susan Heiserman of the North Carolina Music Educators Association told EdNC that advocates continue pushing for legislation requiring K-5 students to have classes taught by licensed arts teachers to ensure foundational access for younger learners.
