Guayaquil music conservatory awaits return to rebuilt building after 2014 fire

The Conservatorio Antonio Neumane, a public and tuition-free music school in Guayaquil, has remained displaced from its original building since a 2014 fire severely damaged the facility, according to expreso.ec.

The institution, created in 1928, has been provisionally housed in three locations: the Escuela República de Costa Rica, the Escuela República de Colombia, and the Colegio Vicente Rocafuerte. The publication reports that these spaces are minimal and insufficient, lacking proper acoustics, noise isolation, adequate climate control, and instruments needed for music instruction.

Students at the conservatory train in instrumental performance and bel canto, earning the title of music teachers upon completion. The news outlet reports that the prolonged displacement has lasted twelve years and caused student dropouts.

Expreso.ec notes that the original building, located at Hurtado 506 and Esmeraldas, appears rebuilt from the outside, but its reopening remains unconfirmed. The publication quotes area residents questioning why Guayaquil lacks a functioning conservatory while Quito maintains the Conservatorio Superior Nacional.

The conservatory is named for composer Antonio Neumane, who wrote the music for Ecuador’s National Anthem. The outlet reports that cultural authorities and the Ministry of Education have not publicly addressed the delay.
