Established in 1956 as the Saigon National School of Music, the institution has operated under various names before adopting its current title in 1981. Over seven decades, it has transformed from a facility with limited initial programs into a comprehensive center for artistic training, research, and practice.
Originally providing in-depth instruction in Vietnamese and Western music with fewer than 20 specializations, the conservatory now offers education ranging from intermediate levels to postgraduate degrees. This expansion supports human resource development for Ho Chi Minh City, the southern region, and the nation by connecting training with professional performance, composition, and arts management. The school also emphasizes researching, preserving, and promoting traditional Southern Vietnamese music values alongside modern professional standards.
Generations of educators and students have emerged from the program, with many faculty members earning titles such as People’s Teacher and People’s Artist. Many graduates work in training institutions, art organizations, and research fields nationwide. The conservatory facilitates international engagement, with experts invited to judge global competitions and students achieving recognition at various national and international art festivals.
