More than 150 members of the Hudson High School Swing Marching Band completed their sixth annual overnight preseason camp at Marietta College, focusing on teamwork and campus immersion from July 26-30. The Marietta Times reported that the weeklong event transformed the college campus into a hub for music and connection for students from northeast Ohio.
Director John Rodesh told the Marietta Times that the overnight format allows the group to develop camaraderie and leadership skills that define their program. The camp included 154 participants, featuring 56 freshmen, who rehearsed pregame and halftime shows twice daily on Don Drumm Stadium Field and held full-band sessions inside McDonough Auditorium.
Beyond musical instruction, students engaged in traditions such as a new-member welcome ceremony at The Gathering Place and an opening-night dodgeball event at the Dyson-Baudo Recreation Center. Rodesh emphasized to the Marietta Times that memories created during evening activities are vital for student retention and growth.
The week concluded with a performance on Christy Mall for college faculty and staff, where the band played crowd favorites including “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Free Bird.” Tara Meagle, director of advancement events and conference services at Marietta College, stated that hosting the group provides many students with their first extended experience on a college campus. The Marietta Times noted this camp is part of multiple summer programs the college hosts across various disciplines.
