Irving Middle School choir teacher Mike Robb wins Golden Apple Award

Vocal music educator Mike Robb was surprised during a seventh-grade choir rehearsal at Irving Middle School with the August 2026 Golden Apple Award, 1011now.com reported. The honor, presented by 10/11 News and Doane University, recognizes Robb’s 29 years of classroom service, including 26 years specifically at Irving.

According to the report, accompanist Julie Schumacher nominated Robb, citing his exceptional preparation and ability to challenge students with advanced repertoire typically reserved for high school ensembles. Schumacher noted that Robb’s dedication fosters a voluntary 7 a.m. choir program attended four days weekly. The news outlet stated that Robb prioritizes establishing safe spaces where students feel comfortable taking musical risks while building strong relationships.

Irving Principal Rachael Kluck-Spann told 1011now.com that Robb’s approach helps students grow beyond musical notation into confident individuals. Robb, who studied music education at Nebraska Wesleyan University, expressed that his greatest reward remains witnessing former students continue their musical journeys. The source indicated that nominations for the next Golden Apple Award are currently being accepted for September consideration.
