Conductor James Gaffigan will join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) for performances of Wagner’s Ring Without Words—a concert version of the fantasy opera cycle The Ring arranged by the late Lorin Maazel.
Pianist Stephen Hough will be the featured soloist on Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1, also on the program.
The DSO will also present the world premiere of Britta Byström’s Many, Yet One. Byström is the eighth winner of the Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for Female Composers, a prize that includes the commission of a new orchestral work to be premiered by the DSO.
The concerts will take place Saturday, January 6 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, January 9 at 3 p.m. at Orchestra Hall, within Midtown Detroit’s Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center.
The Sunday afternoon concert will be webcast for free at dso.org/live and via Facebook Live as part of the DSO’s Live from Orchestra Hall series.
One hour prior to each performance, patrons are invited to enjoy pre-concert talks on the Orchestra Hall stage. Saturday’s talk will be an interview with composer Britta Byström, and conductor Todd Craven will discuss the program at Sunday’s talk.
