This is a role for a confident, creative classroom musician who can teach strong practical and theoretical music lessons, lead extra‑curricular ensembles, and contribute to improving department practice across the secondary age range. You will be equally comfortable teaching whole‑class lessons and running small‑group instrumental coaching, and you will enjoy working with colleagues across the Trust to give students memorable musical experiences.

What you'll be doing:

• Teach music across the age and ability range, planning clear, well‑structured lessons that build knowledge and skills.

• Use formative and summative assessment to track progress, set targets and adapt teaching to secure improvement.

• Manage behaviour with clear routines and consistent expectations so lessons are productive and safe.

• Lead or support extra‑curricular music opportunities (ensembles, concerts, trips) that broaden students' experience.

• Analyse performance data and exam results to inform planning and intervention for individuals and groups.

• Contribute to curriculum development and schemes of work within the Performing Arts department.

• Communicate with parents and other staff about student progress, and participate in department and whole‑school meetings.

• Take part in the wider life of the Academy, supporting events and activities that improve student engagement.

What we're looking for

Essential:

• Qualified Teacher Status and degree (able to work and teach in the UK).

• Strong subject knowledge in music and evidence of effective classroom practice.

• Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate lessons that improve student progress and attainment.

• Competence using assessment and data to set targets and inform teaching.

• Effective behaviour management strategies and experience creating inclusive learning environments.

• Good interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to safeguarding students.

Desirable:

• Experience leading extra‑curricular ensembles, concerts or school music events.

• Experience contributing to curriculum or scheme development within a department.

• Experience working with colleagues across phases or within a multi‑academy trust.

About the team:

You will be part of the Department of Expressive Arts and Sport and report to the Head of Department for Performing Arts. The department delivers practical and theoretical music alongside wider expressive arts and works collaboratively across the Trust on curriculum and enrichment activities.

What we offer:

• Personalised CPD and regular feedback focused on development.

• Support for workload and staff wellbeing, including a two‑week October half term.

• Opportunities to collaborate with primary and secondary colleagues across The Challenge Academy Trust.

• Consideration of applications from ECTs and those wishing to job‑share.

• Access to the Teachers Pension Scheme

• Access to TCAT+, our Reward, Recognition and Wellbeing platform, including access to retailer discounts and benefits, car lease scheme, discounted healthcare cash plan, cycle to work scheme, Employee Assistance Programme, and other online resources to support physical, emotional, professional, financial and social wellbeing.

• Access to a comprehensive CPD framework through ‘Education Connect’, our professional development arm, and online resources from the National College’.

• An environment where employee health and wellbeing are actively supported and promoted.

• A supportive and inclusive working environment where safeguarding is a core priority
