General Description
The Technical Theater Specialist supports school and community use of the Canby High School Fine Arts Center by providing technical support for school productions and community facility use; maintaining equipment inventory and condition records; serving as safety manager for the facility; and recruiting, training, and overseeing student technical assistants training and event supervision and management. Community-related work is performed outside the regular daily schedule, and regular night and weekend hours are required.
Essential Functions
• Recruit, train, and oversee student and community technical assistants who provide technical support for school and community use of the Fine Arts Center.
• Maintain all technical equipment associated with the Fine Arts Center in safe, working condition.
• Keep an ongoing inventory of all equipment and facilities associated with the auditorium, including seating, curtains, and rigging and fly systems, and record the condition of each.
• In accordance with district policy, check district equipment in and out, whether for use in the auditorium or for use by school or community organizations elsewhere.
• Serve as safety manager for the Fine Arts Center, including arranging and documenting required inspections of rigging and stage systems and restricting use of equipment when unsafe conditions exist.
• Coordinate daytime in-house duties with high school administration.
• Provide and supervise technical support for middle and high school fine arts productions and other district events in the Performing Arts Center.
• Provide technical services for light and sound design, set design and construction, set consultation, and safety management for other school and district events.
• Work with facilities staff to provide technical assistance as requested for community use of the auditorium.
• Provide a high level of service to community organizations to support continued growth in community use of the Fine Arts Center.
• Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Perform other related duties and assume other responsibilities as needed and directed by supervisor(s).
Job Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater or related field (Preferred).
Work Experience
• Experience providing technical support in a theater or performance venue serving multiple user groups is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of theater sound, lighting, set design, and prop design and construction.
• Knowledge of theater infrastructure and equipment, including fly systems, seating, and stage curtains.
• Knowledge of theater safety management standards and compliance regulations for facility operations.
• Knowledge of equipment check-in and check-out tracking methods and district operational policies.
• Technical skill in executing light and sound design, set construction, and technical consultation for school and district productions.
• Technical skill in maintaining, inspecting, and tracking the condition of Fine Arts Center equipment.
• Skill in recruiting, training, certifying, and supervising student and community technical assistants.
• Strong organizational and communication skills to coordinate facility scheduling and technical needs across school administration, staff, and community groups.
• Ability to maintain effective, professional working relationships with students, district staff, public agencies, and community organizations.
• Ability to manage operations and supervise technical support during non-standard hours, including required nights and weekends.
• Ability to perform physical tasks required for stage setup and equipment maintenance, including climbing, reaching, bending, and lifting objects ranging from 50 to over 100 pounds.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Work occurs in and around a public performance venue, including the stage, orchestra pit, catwalks and grid, control booth, scene shop, storage areas, and loading area. Requires a flexible schedule with required evening and weekend hours. Work involves elevated work surfaces, ladders and lifts, overhead rigging and suspended loads, electrical systems, and hand and power tools. May be exposed to high sound levels, theatrical lighting and haze or fog effects, dust, paints and solvents, and periods of low light. Frequent interaction with students, staff, community patrons, and the general public. Must maintain positive, professional communication and uphold district standards of conduct under deadline pressure tied to scheduled performances and events.
• Heavy Work: Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
