We are seeking a part-time, self-employed Teacher of Cello to join us from January 2027, following the retirement of the current postholder.

We currently have five pupils receiving cello tuition, with considerable scope to develop the number of pupils learning the instrument. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to build upon the existing provision and encourage further participation across the school.

Music plays a central role in the academic, cultural and spiritual life of Stonyhurst, reflecting the College's rich heritage and its commitment to developing the talents of every pupil. From the earliest stages of their education through to the Sixth Form, pupils are encouraged to discover and develop their musical abilities through individual instrumental tuition, ensemble participation and a varied programme of concerts, recitals, productions and liturgical performances.

The Music Department provides a vibrant and supportive environment in which pupils of all abilities can flourish. Individual tuition is complemented by a wide range of opportunities for collaborative music making, enabling pupils to develop both their technical skills and their confidence as performers. Music contributes significantly to the wider life of the College, with regular performances both within Stonyhurst and at prestigious venues further afield.

Recent pupils leaving the Music Department have progressed to study music at universities and conservatoires, including the University of Oxford. The Department seeks both to nurture those wishing to pursue music at the highest level and to inspire a lifelong love of music in every pupil.

Visiting Music Teachers are valued members of the wider Music Department and school community.

A Teacher of Cello is expected to:

• Actively promote the Stonyhurst ethos as set out in the College Mission Statement;

• Teach cello to pupils across Pre-Prep, Prep and the College;

• Have control over their own timetabling within agreed boundaries, in consultation with the Music Department.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and hard-working with a high level of emotional intelligence.
