The Music Department at Dulwich College Shanghai’s Pudong Campus

Music is taught by specialist teachers to every student, from Toddlers (age 2) through to the IB Diploma (Year 13).

In DUCKS (ages 2–7), students build musical fundamentals through singing and classroom music, and learn recorder in Year 2. In the Junior School (ages 7–11), music is structured around our string and band programmes. Every Year 3 student learns a string instrument and every Year 5 student learns a woodwind or brass instrument in their weekly music lesson. In Years 4 and 6, students choose either to continue in the string or band programme or to follow a general classroom music pathway. In the Senior School, music is compulsory to age 14, with a classroom programme focused on composing, listening, and performing; students may then opt to take Music at IGCSE and IB.

Beyond the curriculum, we offer more than 25 ensembles for students of all ages and abilities, and a strong annual programme of performances, from informal in-school concerts to high-profile events at world-class venues across Shanghai. We also run a number of trips each year, including several residential music festival trips for Junior and Senior School students, and regularly welcome visiting musicians to the school to give workshops for our students. Our students are motivated and talented, and we have a consistently strong record of academic results and high standards in our concerts and performances.

The Music Department is a busy and well-resourced place to work. We have a team of seven music teachers, two assistant teachers, and two music administrators, supported by 18 part-time one-to-one instrumental and vocal teachers. The department is equipped with specialist classrooms, practice rooms, a large rehearsal space and a full inventory of instruments — enough to lend an instrument to every student in the string and band programme, alongside a generous supply of pianos, percussion, and rock and pop instruments.

Dulwich College International Schools are part of the wider EiM family. Across our schools, we are focused on nurturing every student to have the skills and motivation to thrive in life and make a positive difference in the world – that is, to Live Worldwise. To this end, we look to recruit the very best practitioners in international education who are passionate about unlocking the potential of our students, and who will continue to grow with us. Working within Education in Motion allows staff and students to collaborate closely with the other schools in our network. This encourages an international mindset and creates an extended community where creativity is valued and diversity is celebrated.

The successful candidate can expect a generous salary and benefits including accommodation, medical insurance, flights, and 100% tuition fees remission for up to two children (Reception aged upwards). We support staff with generous professional learning and exciting prospects for career development.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and we reserve the right to make an appointment before the closing date. Interviews will take place in Shanghai or online.

Closing date: Friday 20th November

Opportunity and Market

China has 1 linked active ArtistPro listing. National population supplies scale, but it does not establish city-level demand. [1]

Career Outlook

The national unemployment indicator provides broad context only. Occupation- and city-specific demand was unavailable from a validated jurisdictional dataset, so Career Opportunity and Career Safety scores are omitted. [3]

Compensation

GDP per capita is included solely as national economic context. It is not a salary-equivalency or purchasing-power calculation, and the listing’s currency, taxes, pension and contract terms must be verified. [2]

Housing and Cost of Living

Validated city-level housing and rent data were unavailable in this automated run. Candidates should use official or regulated local housing sources and avoid treating national economic indicators as rent estimates.

Commute

Validated city-level commute and transportation-cost data were unavailable. Confirm the exact worksite, transit availability and commuting rules with the employer before relocating.

Community Snapshot

China national population and economic indicators provide country context; they do not support neighborhood-level claims about safety, culture or community fit. [1] [2]

Local Economy

The national unemployment and GDP-per-capita indicators describe the broader economy, not the city or employer. [3] [2]

Relocation Considerations

Work authorization, healthcare eligibility and tax obligations are jurisdiction-specific and can determine whether the role is viable. Use the official linked resources and confirm sponsorship directly with the employer. [4] [5] [6]

What I Wish I'd Known Before Taking the Job

A job offer does not itself prove visa eligibility, sponsorship, healthcare access or net take-home pay. Confirm all four before paying relocation costs. [4] [5] [6]
