The Johnson Central High School choir in Paintsville, Kentucky, has been selected as one of 24 groups to perform at the White House Holiday Open House in December, chosen from more than 1,000 applicants. WYMT reported that the 80-student ensemble is preparing two hours of holiday music for the event.
Recently retired assistant choir director Andrea Daniels submitted the application. Choir director Amy Conley, who has led the program for two decades, said she was overwhelmed with pride upon learning of the selection.
Students described the news as shocking for their small-town school. Choir member Tessa Amburgey said music means a great deal to her, while Joshua Fitchpatrick said the group looks forward to bringing their Appalachian sound to a wider audience.
The school recently removed a wall to give the large ensemble one rehearsal space. Students said they view the choir as a team that must blend and work together.
Conley said the invitation reflects every student who has built the program over the years. The choir is accepting donations to help fund travel to Washington, D.C.
