The Juilliard Orchestra’s 2016-17 season features more than a dozen performances led by guest and faculty conductors.

Highlights include four debuts, by Lithuanian conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla on the opening concert of the season on September 26, 2016; conductor Steven Osgood, who will conduct Juilliard Opera’s production of Jonathan Dove’s Flight on November 16, 18, and 20, 2016; Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki on December 15, 2016; and Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto, who will conduct the closing concert of Juilliard’s 2017 Focus! festival featuring the music of Latin America on January 27, 2017.

In other highlights, Alan Gilbert, director of orchestral and conducting studies at Juilliard and music director of the New York Philharmonic, conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in Dutilleux’s Cello Concerto and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 in the only David Geffen Hall concert of the season on January 24, 2017.

The orchestra’s cross-divisional collaborations include performing in two Juilliard Opera productions – Jonathan Dove’s Flight, conducted by Steven Osgood (November 16, 18, and 20) and Leoš Janáček’s Katya Kabanova, conducted by Anne Manson (April 21, 23, and 25). The orchestra will also perform in Juilliard Dances Repertory (conductor to be announced; March 22-25).

Carlos Miguel Prieto makes his conducting debut with the Juilliard Orchestra on the closing night of Juilliard’s eight-day Focus! festival on January 27, 2017. The theme of the festival is music of Latin America.

Juilliard’s smaller ensembles also have a busy season. The Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, a conductorless ensemble coached by Orpheus member and Juilliard faculty member and New York Philharmonic cellist Eric Bartlett, performs on April 28. And the school’s newest ensemble, the Juilliard Wind Orchestra, presents three concerts this season in October, December, and February, led by Juilliard faculty membersAnthony McGill, Nathan Hughes, and a to-be-announced conductor.

Reasonably priced tickets are available for the concerts, which take place in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Alice Tully Hall, and David Geffen Hall. Tickets are free for Juilliard students; non-Juilliard students may purchase half-price tickets. Box Office and ticket information follows at the end of the release.
