The Times of India reported that the Kolkata Youth Ensemble marked its 11th anniversary with the annual concert Waves of Onze at Rabindra Sadan on July 31. Founded in 2015 under violinist Amitava Ghosh, the string-based chamber orchestra has grown from a small group into a large ensemble capable of uniting nearly 150 artistes. Members span different age groups and professions, expanding the organization’s reach beyond West Bengal.
Conducted by Ghosh, the programme commemorated the centenaries of Satyajit Ray, Annapurna Devi, Asha Bhosle, and Salil Chowdhury alongside Western composers through a large-scale Vocal Symphony. The evening blended Western classical, Indian classical, and contemporary music, presenting familiar melodies in new instrumental arrangements. Popular songs associated with Bhosle were reimagined through string-led arrangements, while the second half featured fusion rooted in Indian classical traditions.
Prominent guests included Rabindra Sangeet exponent Indrani Sen, singer-composer Joy Sarkar, and eminent artiste Bibha Sengupta, who was felicitated during the event. Reflecting on the journey, Ghosh highlighted the role of instrumental music in nurturing young musicians. He stated that music acts as therapy for students of various ages and helps form a better society. The celebration brought together generations of musicians to make orchestral music accessible to a wider audience.
