KPS Educator Wright Receives UNK Alumna Award

Kearney Public Schools music educator Angela Wright has been honored with the 2026 Gary Thomas Distinguished Music Alumna Award from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Central Nebraska Today reported.

The award celebrates UNK alumni whose careers have left a lasting mark on music education. Wright will be recognized at the 46th Annual UNK Distinguished Alumni Awards Luncheon on October 2, 2026, part of the university’s Homecoming celebration.

For 24 years, Wright has taught K‑5 students at KPS, introducing them to music and encouraging creativity, confidence and a lasting appreciation for the arts, Central Nebraska Today reported. She began her career at Sumner‑Eddyville‑Miller Public Schools and brings 27 years of dedication to the field.

Wright serves as president of the Nebraska Music Education Association and has led workshops, honor choirs, festivals and mentorship programs for educators statewide, Central Nebraska Today reported. She also sits on the boards of the Kearney Concert Association and Handbell Musicians of America Area 8‑Nebraska, directs the Platte River Children’s Chorale and conducts church choirs and handbell ensembles.

Wright earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from UNK in 1999 and a master’s in 2005, performing in several university ensembles during her studies, Central Nebraska Today reported.
