The University of Kansas Chamber Choir secured first prize in the Mixed Choir category and the overall Grand Prix at the Zilina Voce Magna international choir competition in Slovakia this summer. news.ku.edu reported that the ensemble, part of the KU School of Music, earned the highest distinction available at the annual festival, which features groups from around the world.
The competition included significant cultural collaboration and performances in historical venues, according to the university report. A jury panel led by Jiri Skopal, conductor of the Jitro Choir in the Czech Republic, presided over the event. The KU group advanced to the Grand Prix round after completing an initial repertoire round.
This victory adds to a string of recent international successes for the choir, news.ku.edu noted. The ensemble previously won the Preveza International Choir Competition in July 2023 and the Cracovia Cantans International Choir Competition in Krakow, Poland, in June 2025. The University of Kansas is a public institution governed by the Kansas Board of Regents.
