The La Crescent-Hokah High School Marching Band will perform ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” during the Minnesota State Fair daily parade and marching band competition on Monday, WXOW reported. The roughly 90-student ensemble, comprising the marching band, drum line, color guard and drum majors, adopted the song as a surprise reveal during band camp this year.
Drum Major Ella Heintz told WXOW that students reacted positively to the change from their original selection, noting many already knew the tune. Senior color guard member Quinn Jorgenson shared with the outlet that the performance recalls her role in a high school production of “Mamma Mia.” She noted the group gets to bring fun energy while dancing with flags along the 14-block route.
Heintz emphasized the value of sharing this experience with classmates, including students attending the fair with the band for the first time. Following the state fair appearance, where the group is scheduled fourth in the lineup for the parade beginning at 2 p.m., students will return home for a fall season featuring local parades and football games. Band Director Erik Chapman informed WXOW that the team is preparing a special America 250 halftime show for their first home game on Sept. 4, incorporating patriotic music and reenactors from the local Company B chapter to celebrate local history.
