Lake County earns three statewide music education honors

Lake County made history when its superintendent, school board and a community arts organization each earned statewide recognition for supporting music education, Yahoo reported.

The Florida Music Education Association named Diane Kornegay its Superintendent of the Year, the Lake County School Board its School Board of the Year and Lake Community Arts its Community Arts Partner of the Year, according to Yahoo. The awards were announced at the board’s Oct. 12 meeting, Lake County Schools said.

FMEA Executive Director Scott Evans credited Kornegay with helping ensure arts programs and instruction are available at every Lake County public school, Yahoo reported. He also praised the School Board for supporting budgets and curriculum that keep arts and music central to student achievement.

Lake Community Arts was recognized for expanding access to arts experiences and connecting students with opportunities beyond their schools, according to Yahoo. The district said this is the first time in FMEA’s awards history that three major statewide recipients have come from the same district or county.

Kornegay, the board and Lake Community Arts will be formally recognized at the FMEA Awards Ceremony in Tampa in January, Yahoo reported. FMEA is a nonprofit organization that supports music education in Florida schools.
