Lawrence University reported the expansion of its summer music programming, welcoming nearly 80 young classical musicians to Appleton for intensive training and public performances. The lineup features the Lawrence Summer Music Institute for high schoolers and the returning Lawrence Chamber Music Festival for pre-professional artists, both utilizing campus facilities and downtown venues.
New this year, the institute adds a Classical Voice track alongside its existing Piano and Strings curriculum, serving 37 students from 12 states. The festival hosts 40 participants from 19 states and three countries, including five current Lawrence students and five alumni who gain advanced chamber music study opportunities alongside faculty mentors.
The programs emphasize practical classroom-to-career pathways by offering three arts administration internships in marketing and event production. These roles align with the university’s Business and Entrepreneurship major, providing students hands-on experience in audience engagement. Furthermore, participants collaborate with visiting artists during the Mile of Music festival, creating original arrangements and performing in community settings. Faculty members lead workshops and coaching sessions, while specific events like the interactive Music in Motion concert engage local families, reinforcing the institution’s role in broader music education access.
