Lorne music teacher named finalist for victoria Education award

A music teacher at Lorne P-12 College has been named one of three finalists in the outstanding secondary teacher category at this year’s Victorian Education Excellence Awards, Times News Group reported.

John Waller has spent 16 years teaching at the school, where he leads the music program. He was nominated by a colleague and presented his teaching achievements to a panel of education experts as part of the selection process.

Waller, an accomplished musician who has performed with international touring artists, draws on his industry experience to give students opportunities to write, record and perform their own music, including playing live gigs, according to the report.

The school’s music program has grown considerably since Waller began teaching there, expanding from himself and one primary staff member to include one primary teacher, two secondary teachers and four instrumental music teachers.

Students in the program have achieved five perfect study scores of 50 in VCE VET Music and received two Premier’s VCE Awards, Times News Group reported.

Winners of the Victorian Education Excellence Awards will be announced on October 23.
