Marietta High School’s marching band, known as the Wall of Sound, is currently rehearsing a winter-themed production titled “Frost Work” under the leadership of new director Barnett, WTAP reported. The theme of this season’s show explores the phases of winter, ranging from icy syncopated chords to the smooth stillness of the season, before concluding with music representing the return of spring warmth.
Barnett, in her first year leading the program after serving at Frontier Local Schools, told WTAP that she prioritizes knowing each student individually to build trust early in her tenure. She emphasized that the value of the ensemble extends beyond academics to include essential life skills such as responsibility, time management, and resilience when facing critique or mistakes.
Students interviewed by WTAP highlighted the social and personal growth fostered by the program. Senior drum major Miguel Garduno Salas noted that the band sets a positive tone for the school year, while percussionist Synneve McKay described the necessary camaraderie where every member must show up for the unit. Sophomore Levi McVey shared that participation helped him overcome shyness to become confident, stating that the experience is only 30% music and 70% dedication and friendship. Barnett credited the program’s success to a supportive team of instructors and staff who assist with visual, percussion, and guard components alongside the students.
