The Maryland Music Educators Association reported the selection of its 2022 incoming board officers. Mdmea stated that Shefali Shah, a Baltimore County teacher specializing in music technology for grades six through twelve, will serve alongside colleagues representing diverse educational settings. Shah has served on the MMEA board since 2018 in various capacities.
According to the association, Otis Eldridge, a band director at Hamilton Elementary/Middle School, brings experience from Baltimore City public schools to the leadership team. Scott Engel, selected as one of the “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” in 2015, continues his work as a high school band and general music teacher in Washington County while assuming board duties. The report notes that Gabriel Gray, an elementary music and chorus director in Charles County, joins the officers after serving as a professional development facilitator.
Kate Evans, an associate professor at Towson University, rounds out the leadership as a specialist in choral and general music education. Mdmea indicated that these officers hold backgrounds in collegiate representation, curriculum development and student ensemble direction. Their roles span from kindergarten instruction to higher education research, reflecting the realities of daily teaching and the need for arts programs within Maryland schools.
