Hannah Wehlander, who teaches K-5 music including fifth-grade band at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary School in Mitchell, has received the 2026 Outstanding Young Music Educator Award from the South Dakota Music Education Association, mitchellrepublic.com reported.
The award honors early-career music teachers in South Dakota in their third through seventh year of teaching who demonstrate strong dedication, early success and high promise in music education. Wehlander is in her fifth year of teaching, according to the publication.
Wehlander, an Esmond native and Iroquois High School graduate, initially focused on special education at Dakota Wesleyan University before switching to music education and graduating in December 2022. She also directs the front ensemble for the Mitchell High School marching band.
Her principal, Allison Pierson, told the publication that Wehlander creates experiences for students that build confidence and encourage creativity. Mitchell High School marching band director Joel Van Peursem, a past award recipient himself, said Wehlander connects to each student no matter who they are.
Wehlander told the publication she appreciates the active environment where students make music rather than sit with a textbook. She said the award validates the work of specialist teachers who sometimes feel pushed aside.
