The Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) is establishing a dedicated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEIA) subcommittee, according to MMEA officials. This group will specifically concentrate on ensuring fairness within audition processes and procedures for student musicians. Tom Westmoreland currently leads the broader MMEA DEIA Committee.
The subcommittee’s composition includes a range of music professionals, such as composers, conductors, and clinicians, reflecting a diverse set of perspectives. The group’s work will also extend to creating fresh avenues for student performances.
The larger MMEA DEIA Committee is dedicated to cultivating inclusive music education, professional development, and curricular approaches. The committee recognizes and values the unique qualities of individuals, their backgrounds, and identities.
Furthermore, beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, a DEIA representative will be added to the MMEA Executive Board, possessing voting privileges. All members of working groups associated with the MMEA All-State Conference will be welcome to participate.
