More than 160 Oakland Unified School District students performed at Lake Merritt as part of the district's Middle School Summer Music Camp, bringing a large student ensemble into one of the city's most visible public spaces.
The outdoor appearance at the Lake Merritt bandstand preceded the camp's final concert for families, school employees, students and invited guests. Oakland Unified described the performances as the culmination of a summer program that kept middle school musicians rehearsing and playing together after the regular academic year ended.
Summer ensemble programs can help districts address a recurring challenge in school music: students may lose playing time and contact with instructors during a long break. A shared camp also brings musicians from different campuses together, expanding the social and musical experience beyond a student's home school.
The size of Oakland's participating group shows substantial demand for continued music-making. Its public performance also allowed the wider community to see the results of district music instruction rather than limiting the program to a school auditorium or private closing event.
